Understanding the behaviour of workpieces' bulk temperature during laser-assisted turning of Ti6Al4V alloy and heating of Al-SiC metal-matrix composite rods

Although laser-assisted turning (LAT) has been studied for decades, little is known on the effect of bulk temperature rise and residual in workpiece. Here we report an investigation a comparison characteristics LAT Ti6Al4V alloy laser heating Al/SiC metal matrix composite (MMC) as two materials have significant differences thermal conductivities. The research shows that at low cutting speed with power density, larger beam spot, commonly used previous processing MMC processes, it may cause too much heat accumulation inside material, particularly material higher conductivity. A new strategy proposed based this study, which combines high speed, smaller spot size to avoid workpiece energy wastage during Besides, found tool 0.3 mm depth than 0.5 Ti6Al4V, opposite conventional machining.
